Talent spotting at the Rugby Club – success as we rolled-out our inaugural Graduate Day

Our inaugural Graduate Day which took place recently at Worcester Rugby Club, home of the Worcester Warriors, proved to be a great success.

The event was held in the Duckworth Suite and the day’s itinerary was devised with the help of The People Experts™, a local recruitment specialist that utilises social media and team exercises to find and assess candidates to make sure the employer and the employee are a perfect fit.

Graduate delegates from universities throughout the West and East Midlands attended the really full-on day. Postcode Anywhere’s senior management team were in full force and assisted in every aspect of the day’s proceedings.

The event started off with registration and refreshments which gave us the opportunity to meet and chat to the delegates in an informal atmosphere.

Each member of the management team, including our managing director, did a ten minute presentation on the company’s structure. Jason Ford presented an overview of the sales department for example, while Guy Mucklow talked about our vision for the future. It was really exciting to share our plans with an audience of potential employees and their enthusiasm and listening skills were really impressive. They seemed generally interested in our unique corporate culture which we feel came across in our respective presentations.

The Graduate delegates came from universities located in a wide geographical spread including Keele in Staffordshire, Birmingham, Aston and nearer to home, the University of Worcester. One particular graduate had travelled all the way from Cardiff! We thought this demonstrated true dedication.

After the management team did their presentations we had lunch which presented an opportunity to talk to delegates and generally network with them. Directly after lunch Adam Laidler, from the People Experts™, divided the delegates into groups.

The groups were given a challenge and the team at Postcode Anywhere acted as mentors. Two mentors shadowed each group of graduates while they worked on their problem solving exercise. I think I wasn’t the only one who was quite glad we were acting as mentors, as the first exercise was way above my head.

After the first challenge there was a business plan exercise followed by a heated debate. Finally the delegates were asked to conclude the business plan exercise by presenting their findings in their designated groups.

We were astounded by the skills and aptitudes demonstrated by the Graduate delegates. Their knowledge was staggering and how they all worked together as a cohesive team when they had never even met before the event, was quite awe inspiring.

It was also interesting to see how individual delegates applied themselves, kept on task and brought some innovative ideas to the table.

We all had a truly enjoyable day. Adam Laidler from the People Experts™ and his assistant were highly professional and the event was well organised and seamlessly slick.

As for the team at Postcode Anywhere we were exhausted, but our mission was definitely accomplished as we spotted some fantastic talent. For the senior management team it was also an opportunity to team build, as it tested us to the limit in terms of mentoring and monitoring. All in all, a great day was had by everyone.
